Beckton is a suburban area of East London, situated within the London borough of Newham.
Historically Beckton was an unpopulated marshland adjacent to the River Thames. However, major industrial infrastructure was built there in the 19th century to support the growing city of London, and so Beckton became a home for the workers and their families.
Industry has now left the area, and Beckton has been redeveloped as part of the Docklands project. Beckton is now comprised of mostly housing and some out of city shopping centres.
